HOW ASHNIKKO'S 'STUPID' HAS JUST BECOME SPOTIFY'S #1 VIRAL TRACK
Ashnikko is the latest emerging artist to experience the wild viral wave that is TikTok.
If you're not a regular TikToker, you'd be forgiven if you hadn't got your bearing on who Ashnikko is yet. But give it a minute, she's set to become a household name.
The first thing you need to know about Ashnikko is she's pretty much indefinable. Nobody is doing what Ashnikko's doing. She's unabashedly herself, and she's never afraid to speak her mind. Her music sits somewhere between heavy, alt and rap. Thematically speaking sexual liberation, girl power and challenging gender norms seem to be major focuses for the boundary-breaking rapper.
Ashnikko's 23, she was born in North Carolina but based in the UK and she has an aesthetic that's often compared to the anime superstar Miku Hatsune. She has one boss personality and damn can this girl spit bars. Ashnikko loaded her first clip to YouTube in April 2018. In little more than a year and a half, she has over ten million streams on Spotify and six million views on her YouTube videos.
Ashnikko dropped her EP Hi, It's Me in July 2019. The titular track and the hit Special racked up some serious streaming numbers but it's her Young Baby Tate collab, Stupid, that's absolutely exploded, climbing its way to #1 on Spotify's Viral 50.

The track's newfound success can largely be attributed to the karaoke-style app TikTok. Users have turned a part of the intro and chorus into one of TikTok's most played sounds this month.

There are well over a million videos that have been uploaded to the app using the song.
Some people have turned Stupid into a dance challenge.
Others have used it as a hilarious post-breakup power move.
Then there's plenty of memes. Including the TikTok classic: laughing with (or at) people's parents.
