KIIARA TACKLES HER OWN MENTAL HEALTH IN THE GLITCH-POP BOP 'OPEN MY MOUTH'

The pulsating new single Open My Mouth marks the return of the glitch-pop princess Kiiara and her unique flavour of genre-blurring ear-candy.
Kiiara was one of the first successful pop stars to emerge out of the DIY SoundCloud wave back in 2015. The glitchy bedroom production and ethereal vocals on her breakthrough hit Gold ushered in a new era of pop. Sure sultry female vocals layered over edgy electro beats are everywhere in 2019, but Kiiara was the start.
Gold became the soundtrack of the internet, while simultaneously climbing charts around the world. It now sits just shy of half a billion streams on Spotify alone.
Kiiara's whirlwind success saw her collaborating with Linkin Park, staring on Jimmy Fallon, and selling out her own headline tours. She's since worked with some of biggest names in both the hip-hop and electronic games; think David Guetta, Dimitri Vegas, Steve Aoki, Ty Dolla $ign and Future.
Now back with her jaw-dropping lead single Open My Mouth, Kiiara gives fans a taste of what’s to come off her forthcoming debut record
And not only does her latest sonic offering slap, it's also got a raw and empowering message.
"Art is open for interpretation, so while some will listen to this song and relate to it based on relationships they’ve had in their lives, for me this song is about the relationship I have with myself,” Kiiara says of the new track.
“I’ve struggled with mental health issues for my entire life. I’ve felt silenced, I’ve felt alone, and I’ve felt afraid. To me, this song is about facing these realities and putting it all out there. It feels empowering to open up and finally speak my truth, and I hope in doing so I can encourage others to let their guard down and do the same, so they don’t feel so alone and helpless."
Yes, yes, yes, to all of the above.
The accompanying music video, directed by Juliana Carpino, features designer Christian Cowan and fashion from his FW19 line along with a special cameo appearance from Austin Mahone. “Working with Kiiara is always a dream, her talent is off the charts, she has her own style and is the most fun to work with. When those all come together it always ends up being magic,” Cowan says of their video collaboration.
